May Meeting at Bangor on Dee - Saturday 16th May

 Irish Riders dominate the entries for Bangor-on-Dee’s race meeting on Saturday with nearly 20 entries from well-known trainers such as Tony Martin and Michael Hourigan. Tony Martin regularly brings horses across the Irish Sea and has had great success over the years in some of the UK’s biggest handicap races on both the Flat and over jumps.  Michael Hourigan trained the prolific and enigmatic BEEF OR SALMON to win many Grade 1 races and has had runners at Bangor-on-Dee.

The home defence looks pretty strong with several entries from Evan Williams, Alison Thorpe and Tim Vaughan, all three of whom train in South Wales and are currently enjoying a high strike rate as the jump season enters its summer phase.  One of the beneficiaries of their good form has been Richard Johnson, perennial 2nd in the Jockey’s Championship behind A P McCoy. This season, however, he finds himself in the lead and he must hope that SNAP TIE, an entry in the Novice Chase (2nd race, 2.45pm), can transfer his high-class hurdles form to the steeple chase sphere.

Donald McCain Jnr also has plenty of entries and DANNY ZUKO takes the eye in the feature race of the day (5th race, 4.30pm), having recently won a handicap hurdle at Bangor in good style.

The North West Area Point to Point Championship is the 6th race on the card, and is a culmination of many Point to Points throughout the North West over the previous months with the best of the horses from this exciting amateur sport qualifying to run here.

The Exhibition Boards celebrating 1859 – 2009 150 years of racing at Bangor on Dee will be on display throughout the afternoon.

There will be a FREE bus from Wrexham General Station to the racecourse at 12.40 pm.  First race is at 2.10 pm and gates open from 12 pm.  Course tickets are available from £7, and Paddock tickets from £17 in advance, with restaurant packages from £50 + VAT.
