Remembering Former Head Groundsman John Malam

Published on 11 July 2019

John Malam – sadly passed away on 10th July 2019.  Born 26th April 1937.

John Malam was Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse through and through.  From the neighbouring village of Overton-on-Dee he began working at the racecourse in 1971 as a groundsman and never really stopped!

Racing was his life and Bangor-on-Dee was the centre of it for him.  In 1980 he was promoted to Head Groundsman and continued as such until 1997, when he retired from the full time position. His commitment and service culminated in the racecourse team being awarded the Neil Wyatt Award for Groundstaff for 1997.

John continued his longstanding love affair with his beloved Bangor-on-Dee and carried on as Stable Manager on racedays and running the Stable Yard between race meetings, often arriving at 10 am for a coffee with the team every other day!

The family tradition continued, when his eldest son Andrew who had worked with him at the course since 1984 was promoted to Head Groundsman in 1997 on John’s retirement and still holds that position today. His younger brother Brian started work as a groundsman in 1991 and continues to be an important part of the team. John was always proud of Bangor on Dee and his ‘lads’. His hard work and dedication are his legacy.

Thank you John, from all at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse.
