Many Hats Thrown Into the Ring At Bangor-on-Dee Ladies Day

7th August 2018

Over 4000 racegoers got into the weekend spirit early and enjoyed an afternoon of sunshine at Ladies Day on Friday 3 August 2018. In addition to the thrilling jump racing action on the track, attentions were focused on the other main event of the afternoon, the Ladies Best Dressed Competition, sponsored by Old Port Spa, Aber Falls and Golden Square Shopping Centre. 132 stylish racegoers put their best foot forward and entered the competition, keen to compete in the style stakes for their chance to win an impressive luxury bundle of prizes.

Co-owner and founder of Old Port Spa Fiona Harrington-Wright, painstakingly looked through the afternoon’s entries and finally arrived at a shortlist of ten.

The finalists were invited into the Parade Ring, where the winning trio were then crowned at 4pm before being invited into the Entertainment suite to toast their success with a glass of champagne.

Third prize went to Alison Gwilliam, wearing a summer shift dress in a bold yellow colour. Accessories with nude court shoes, clutch and fascinator. Second runner up Sarah King, a racing enthusiast, sported a classic look with a longer length white dress, accompanied with black accessories including a show stopping fascinator to complete the monochrome look.

Both Sarah and Alison took home runner up bundle prizes that included a £20 spa voucher kindly supplied by Old Port Spa, a bottle of Aber Falls Gin and two tickets each to the Aber Falls Distillery tour provided by Aber Falls Distillery and a £30 gift voucher donated by Golden Square Shopping Centre.

After much deliberation our judge felt Debbie Pimlett was most deserved of first place position and Debbie was awarded a bundle of prizes including a Summer Sizzle Spa Package courtesy of Old Port Spa, a Bottle of Aber Falls Gin and four tickets to the Aber Falls Distillery tour kindly supplied by Aber Falls Distillery and a £50 gift voucher generously donated by Golden Square Shopping Centre. Debbie’s winning ensemble consisted of a strapless sky-blue dress and co-ordinating nude clutch, fascinator and heeled sandals. Debbie, a regular visitor to Ladies Day at Bangor-on-Dee made the final last year and this year took the crown.

All competition entrants received an electronic photo of their entry pose as a memento and an online gallery of all the entries is now available to view on the official @BangorRaces Facebook page.

Competition on the track was equally as fierce as seven National Hunt victors were awarded trophies throughout the afternoon.

The feature race of the day provided an exceptional performance from Premier King who notched a hat-trick for Foxtrot Racing and the Skeltons in the Fraser Wealth Management Handicap Chase at 2.35.

The Potter Group, sponsors of the fifth race the 3.45; The Canter Carpet Handicap Steeple Chase, officially launched a new product Canter Carpet to the public via the race naming rights on the day. The race in which Volvalien held off Salto Chisco in a good battle for the finish, made it a memorable competition. As part of the official launch of Canter Carpet, a high-performance equestrian surface which uses superior quality recycled carpet fibres to provide a perfectly cushioned ride, whether on an arena, lunging pen, turnout or gallop, the Potter Group took sponsorship of the penultimate fence on the course to further promote their new product to a viable audience.

Debbie Potter, Director at The Potter Group, said: “We’re so delighted to have officially launched Canter Carpet at this summer’s Ladies’ Day event. We have a great association with Bangor-On-Dee Racecourse and it was the perfect opportunity to showcase our product.

“Canter Carpet provides a number of benefits, creating a perfectly cushioned surface for softer landings and reducing fatigue by allowing the horse to ride on top of the surface, rather than sinking into it.

The Potter Group has a long and rich history in the equestrian community; the Group’s owner, James Potter, also owns the Leighton Farm Estate, which houses Yorton Stud Farm - one of the country’s fastest-growing National Hunt breeding operations.

The next raceday at Bangor-on-Dee is Family Evening, Monday 20 August. Gates open at 4.30pm and ticket prices start from just £7 for adults (purchased before 5pm on Friday 17th August). Children aged 17 and under are admitted completely free of charge and there are lots of free activities for kids taking place on the Bangor-End Open Course between races to keep the youngest racegoers entertained.
