This weekend, on Saturday 24 March, Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse host their first Saturday fixture of 2018. The day’s racing is one of only four days hosted over a weekend at the course and with the spring temperatures rising, the day allows for a fantastic opportunity to gather friends and family for a day out and enjoy some top class national hunt racing.
The course's Spring fixture is sandwiched between two of the biggest jump races of the year; The Cheltenham Gold Cup and The Aintree Grand National. Keep an eye on declarations this Friday as entries show six horses entered from the yard of Lucinda Russell in Perth – last year’s Grand National winning trainer, along with as far south as Somerset and South Wales. As ever we’re grateful for the support of our local trainer; Donald McCain, with nine entries.
Gates are scheduled to open at 11.30am with the first race, the Controlled Solutions Group Handicap Hurdle Race, going under starter's orders at 1.40pm. The feature race of the day at 2:15pm, the Shade Oak Stud Mares' Handicap Steeple Chase, provides an ample prize fund of £12,800. The final race concludes a card of seven at 5.10pm.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Racecourse Manager, Jeannie Chantler said:
“This is our first Saturday fixture of the year and with the introduction of warmer weather, we’re hoping for a decent crowd. A generous prize fund of over £56,000 across the course of seven races should entice some good entries later this week and, on the day, we’ll be looking ahead to Aintree and reflecting on former Bangor winners who went on to achieve greatness at the National. We do hope you’ll join us!”
